Reuben Schmitz: packaging a feature-length YouTube movie

Reuben makes travel adventure films from the Netherlands for about 342K subscribers. Before his feature-length movie goes live on November 22, he wanted someone to pressure-test the titles, thumbnails and click-through plan.

One focused Packaging Session, backed by several hours of research

A feature-length movie is a big swing on YouTube. All of that work lives or dies on whether people click, and that comes down to the title and the thumbnail.

Reuben wanted a packaging teardown before launch, not after. He wanted a clear look at his title and thumbnail ideas, how they would hold up on click-through, and straight answers to the questions he had been carrying around about the project.

Here is a look at what we covered and why each part matters, with a few slides from the breakdown I built for Reuben.

01

Start with what his audience already loves

Before suggesting anything new, I went back through Reuben's series to understand what had already landed with his viewers. The best ideas for a big new project usually start with what your audience has already told you they want.

02

Learn from the biggest films in the format

Next I studied the most watched full-length movies on YouTube. Asking someone to click on a feature-length video is a bigger ask than a normal upload, so it helps to know what has already worked at that scale.

03

Keep people watching the whole way

A click only matters if people stay. With a movie this long, we talked through how to keep viewers with him from the first minute to the last, building on things Reuben already does well in his series.

"This was extremely, extremely useful. I'd been looking forward for a long time to having someone with a lot of knowledge look at my project, and Matt made sure every one of my questions got a clear answer."

01

An hour-long Packaging Session

We went through the movie's packaging together, one question at a time, until Reuben had a clear answer to each one.

02

Several hours of research behind it

Before the call I spent several hours studying his channel and the biggest films in the format, to build a breakdown made for this movie only.

03

A clear sense of what will work

Reuben came away understanding what would work best for the movie and why, so he can head into launch day knowing where he stands.

You don't need to know YouTube inside out to use this. The same approach works for a brand, a business or a creator channel: look closely at what already works for you, learn from the best in your space, and make sure people keep watching once they click.

If you have a launch, a new series or a channel that isn't getting the clicks it deserves, I can take you through the same process.

The movie goes live on November 22, 2026. Results from the launch will be added here once there is real data to share.
